12 Aug 08 The Workshop

I’m building an airplane, which requires a bit of space and setup.  I have, for now, a corner of my family’s garage.  They are too kind to put up with my hobbies!  Fortunately, the garage is enormous, so a corner is about the size of a 1-car garage.  I suspect either I’ll move the proect, or creep the space out as the project progresses.

I built two of the EAA-planned work benches.  They are pretty much stock, with the exception that I built them a tad taller than the plans call out.  I’m 6’6″, so a 3-4 extra inches helps.  I’m very likely to get some blocks to raise them another 3-4 inches too.  I hate leaning over to work.

I also built a dimpler table for my Avery dimpler.  Works pretty well, and raises the table top to a nice level too.

I chose to buy a Husky Pro 60-Gallon oiled and belt driven air compressor.  I got 30% off, so it was about the price of most of the much smaller units.  I’ve heard many people say these types of air compressors are quieter than the non-belt-driven non-oiled variety .. I can’t imagine what that would be like.  This particular beast isn’t exactly mute.  The wiring isn’t exactly up to code yet, but it’s safe.

The air compressor runs out to an air-water separator and its own regulator.

More workshop details to come.
